TITLE: 2005 Wild Bird Rehabilitation update
  Author: gary hull
POSTED: 2005-06-17 22:28:47

It has been a while since any entry has been made into the news database. And even longer for a wildlife rehab related article... This year has been by far our most active rehab year to date. And as such I have made use of our new ANIMAL REHAB database to log all patients, groups and events. And to link all of the rehab related media to a patient or group.

Melissa put up the vacancy sign and FriendsOfTheFeathered, org(FOTF,org) was born. ;-) Well not yet exactly but the foundation is being erected even as we speak... Melissas name and reputation have been passed around to the local vets and rehabers as a primarairly BIRD rehab resource and as a result we are getting calls daily which usually end up in us taking a new bird or four into our care ;-). This nesting season (as of june) we have taken in more 34 patients of which 21 are still in our active care. It has been rewarding, educational and very costly in both man hours and dollars. But all in all well worth the effort and the lack of sleep and other project work on my part. And unfortunattly this is just the begining.

The things that we have learned and witnessed this year are amazing. I can't even begin to describe them, and don't even intend to try as it is late and this note is just an aftertought to satisfy may need to post some tid-bit regarding our acttivities of late in the news system. However, a great deal of information and observations have been entered into our new WILD ANIMAL REHAB racking system.

To read more about our wild bird and animal rehabilitation see our ANIMAL REHAB system from the navigation menu. The most interesting observations have benn the behaviors of the various birds being raised in a multi species / age environment. For example we now have two nestlings of different age, on common grackle and a carolina wren, they were brought in at almost the same time so they cohabitate one of our nestling boxes. It is so funny to see this tiny little carolina wren cute as a button, snuggling with a huge, butt-ugly but sweet common grackle baby. Rehab makes for strange bed fellows.

the day to day dissimmilar species relationships are commical to say the least, but the intra-species relations can be even more interesting to watch. We have two blue jay fledglings of different ages, one of which has a disablilty in is left leg, the two of them will beg and feed each other beak to beak.. it is wild to watch...

The (7+) mockingbirds each praticing thier territorial display skills is also amusing. But most of all our inneractions with QuiQui the nut-bag common grackle is the most fun. He loves to play with your fingers and is quite the budding chef, dummping anything he can find into the water dishes to make his grackle gumbo...

please read the entires in our REHAB database for lots more info. Also will be adding care and feeding information for wild birds to help give back to the public some of the wonderful information we have gathered from various sources over the years..
